A woman who was swept into an escalator in a supermarket in Shanghai on April 4 was out of the intensive care unit, and her legs were saved, her family said.

The woman's husband said on a social media platform that the middle-aged woman, who got injured when an escalator suddenly broke down, had been transferred to a general ward. He expressed gratitude to the public for their concerns.

Preliminary investigation showed that the reason the tragedy happened in suburban Fengxian district was that some pedals were missing on the escalator.

After being rescued, the woman was admitted to ICU at Shanghai No 6 People's Hospital, a renowned orthopaedics' center. The hospital once issued a bulletin that she was in a critical condition and she faced the risk of amputation many times.

The district market watchdog said that further investigation of the accident is still going on. An investigation team was set up to look into the use, maintenance, installation, and testing units of the escalator.

The Shanghai Market Regulation Administration said on April 9 that it had launched a month-long, citywide campaign to investigate and rectify potential safety hazards of all the escalators and passenger conveyors. All the over 25,000 escalators and more than 1,500 passenger conveyors will be checked one by one.
