A Hong Kong man was detained by Shenzhen customs officers on April 23, 2014, when he attempted to enter the Chinese mainland with cash strapped to his legs. The man was found carrying $580,000 in cash. Non-resident travelers entering the Chinese mainland with more than $5,000 or an equivalent amount in other foreign currencies must declare the money to customs, according to Chinese customs laws.
